DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker for February 7th Meeting:Megan Rose\nCEO – Better Together\nMegan Rose is the CEO of Better Together\, a nonprofit that helps parents who are going through a difficult time keep their kids out of foster care\, find work and address the root causes of their struggle so that they can reunite as a family with the tools and support system to thrive. \nHer own family’s story of challenges and redemption inspired Rose’s career path. She earned an undergraduate degree in psychology and a master’s degree in human services counseling\, both from Liberty University. She then worked more than 13 years in social services before establishing Better Together in 2015. \nWith the help of volunteers and church communities\, the organization’s families program helps parents build lasting support systems to help overcome hardships like job loss\, addiction\, homelessness\, medical emergencies\, and incarceration. The program works; 98% of children served through hosting and mentoring remain out of the state system. The organization’s work program connects parents and others to meaningful work opportunities via job fairs\, coaching and business partners. \nRose’s work has been recognized locally and nationally. The Manhattan Institute named her a Civil Society Fellow\, raising national awareness of the Better Together mission\, and in 2019\, named her a Civil Society Award winner. She was recognized as a 40 Under 40 honoree by the Business Observer in 2021 and Gulfshore Business in 2022. Better Together also received SWFL Inc.’s 2022 Nonprofit of the Year and The Community Foundation’s 2020 Nonprofit Rising Organization of the Year. Currently\, he serves as the president of the board of directors of the Pine Manor Improvement Association. Stan is an incredibly talented grant writer. \nShari Clark is a US Army veteran who served in the Gulf War. When she left the military\, she moved to Ft. Myers to be with her mother in her final months. She worked for Arizona Beverages. When they closed their operations here\, Shari went to the Pine Manor Community Center to apply for unemployment and use the computers to search for jobs. She volunteered to help others with job searches. Her skills soon led to being hired as a part-time Outreach Coordinator. Two years later\, she was hired by Goodwill to be the full-time Neighborhood Resource Specialist. Prior to his current position\, Todd spent many years managing large scale communities with resort-style amenities after he spent the first half of his career turning around distressed restaurants. \nTodd holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Michigan University and has earned the CMCA and AMS designations from the Community Association Institute (CAI). Volunteerism has been very important to Todd. He has served on several boards and committees to facilitate business growth in his community and has worked to provide resources for the food and housing challenged populations. In December of 2008\, he was asked if he could help as finance Officer and in 2009 was elected as Post Commander. During this period\, Kevin served on the American Red Cross board for 9 years\, the Police Athletic League (PAL) for 13 years\, River District Alliance for 11 years and the last 8 years as Chairman of the Board for RDA. He served on the Dunbar core group for 14 years\, Hearts and Homes for Veterans 3 years\, LARC 2 years. During this period\, Kevin was also the caregiver for his parents for 12 years; both passed at home in home hospice at the ages of 98 and 96 years old. DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker for October 25th Meeting:Lori Burke\nOffsite Meeting: Gulf Coast Humane Society\nLori Burke\, a committed advocate for animals and people\, has lived in Southwest Florida for 14 years with her husband\, two daughters\, two dogs\, and four cats.  Originally\, from Massachusetts\, she and her family have lived in Atlanta\, Georgia; Shanghai\, China; and Fort Myers.  She firmly believes that the only way to feel part of a community is through nonprofits.  While in Atlanta\, she volunteered and provided leadership training at Hands on Atlanta\, she was the Executive Director for Shanghai Sunrise\, one of the first nonprofit programs of the Shanghai Charity Foundation\, supporting the education of Shanghai’s under-resourced youth. \nIn Southwest Florida\, Lori worked at Mothers Against Drunk Driving; fundraising and building its programs in the community to include advocating for victims impacted by impaired driving\, and providing prevention programs at schools\, nonprofits\, and various organizations.  Most recently\, Lori raised funds and managed the membership program at the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples.  In addition to her charitable employment in Southwest Florida\, Lori has held leadership roles on the ArtFest Fort Myers Steering Committee\, the Guardian ad Litem Foundation Board of Directors\, and the Florida Youth Shine SWFL Chapter\, among others. \nLori’s furry family members are all rescue animals.  She is passionate about adopting and not shopping and grateful to be able to be part of GCHS’ legacy in Southwest Florida. \nWEEKLY SUNRISE MEETING\nJoin us on Wednesday at the Gulf Coast Humane Society\n2010 Arcadia St\, Fort Myers\, FL\, 33916\nLET US KNOW YOU ARE ATTENDING

SUMMARY:Scarecrows in the Park Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Scarecrows in the Park FundraiserLast 3 Weekends in October\nParking at Lakes Park\nOur club’s participation in Scarecrows in the Park starts in one month.  This is a significant fundraiser for us and helps us fund our projects throughout the year.  As in years past\, our participation is for three weekends and begins on Friday October 13.  Our final day will be Sunday October 29. \nLakes Park charges a $3 parking fee for this event and our job is to collect it for them.  This is a fun and exciting time of the year and we will be outside\, stationed at the front gate as you enter the park from Gladiolus Drive.  The park will be decorated for Halloween and will be attended by many families with small children.  We will accept cash or credit cards (via our phones) and each interaction will typically last about one minute or less. \nWe always need lots of help over the three weekends.  This year\, we will be partnering with the new Babcock Ranch club and they have already signed up for 25 slots.  That still leaves plenty to fill over the three weekends.  Remember\, you can bring family\, friends and students needing volunteer hours.  A volunteer does not need to be a Rotarian to help. \nThe sign-up link: https://volunteersignup.org/R8Y9R \nPlease visit the link and start signing up.  This is one of the fun things we do.

Hoel\, PhD\nLee County Mosquito Control District – Malaria Update\nDr. David Hoel was born and raised in Columbia\, S.C.\, attended high school in Oklahoma and served 3 years in the Army as an ammunition specialist. Afterwards\, David attended Texas A&M University\, graduating in 1986 with a B.S. in entomology and later with an M.S. in 1993 with a specialization in mosquito biology. In 1994 he received a commission as a Medical Service Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy\, serving as a Medical Entomologist from 1994 to 2017. He deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and served for 2 years as an entomology researcher and department head of the Vector Biology Research Program at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center #3 in Cairo\, Egypt. He completed a PhD at the University of Florida in 2005 studying the bionomics of Aedes albopictus while on active duty. Other Naval assignments included assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University (Bethesda\, MD)\, Navy researcher and liaison officer with the CDC (Atlanta) and also in the same capacity with the USDA’s Center for Medical\, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology in Gainesville\, FL. While working with the CDC\, David served as the county entomologist for the President’s Malaria Initiative in Uganda\, Nigeria and Liberia. \nImmediately after retiring from the Navy\, David accepted an Assistant Director position at the Lee County Mosquito Control District. He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University located in Hickory\, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. He was accepted into the management development program with JB Ivey and Company\, headquartered in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, a retailer now known as Dillard’s. He later moved to the wholesale side of clothing as a manufacturer’s representative for ladies’ apparel. A Church fundraising project put him into the BBQ catering business which then led him to opening a brick-and-mortar BBQ restaurant. \nAlfred served on several boards while in Gastonia including the Gaston-Lincoln Area Mental Health Board\, Gaston County Chapter of the American Red-Cross and Gaston Residential Services-a non-profit advocacy and provider of residential group homes for those with disabilities. He was elected to serve a four-year term on the Gaston County Board of Education in 2008. \nAlfred reconnected with Karen\, a college friend in 2012\, after thirty years had passed. They married in March 2013 and Alfred moved to her home in Englewood. His community involvement includes serving on the board of directors of The Englewood Chamber of Commerce and The United Way of Charlotte County\, along with service to his Church\, Gulf Cove United Methodist. \nAlfred\, a third-generation Rotarian\, began his Rotary journey 31 years ago when he joined the Rotary Club of Gastonia\, North Carolina. He became a member of the Rotary Club of Englewood in July of 2013 and served two terms as club president. He has served as an assistant governor and three years as District Rotary Foundation Chair. Under his leadership\, District 6960 achieved a record-breaking $1.5 million in giving to The Rotary Foundation. \nAlfred and his wife\, Karen\, also a Rotarian\, are Major Donors\, and members of the Bequest Society\, Paul Harris Society\, PolioPlus Society\, as well as the newly formed Triple Crown Society. Jordan continued his work in Jacksonville until 2019\, when he was selected for New Intelligence Analyst training in Quantico\, VA. Her responsibilities included fund development\, internal and external communications\, marketing\, and advancing community and business partnerships. \nPrior to LARC\, Katz established her own company\, Angela Katz\, LLC\, specializing in fundraising strategies for non-profits. She was the development director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida for four years. Katz transitioned into non-profit work after retiring from a successful career as a Regional Vice President with PartyLite Gifts. She was responsible for strategic direction and training for a sales leadership team of more than 300 individuals\, generating more than $1 million in annual sales. \nKatz aims to continue championing innovative programs and meeting community needs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. With nearly 100\,000 students and 13\,000+ employees\, Dr. Bernier will lead the 9th largest school district in Florida and 32nd largest in the U.S. His priority as Superintendent is to lead with a student-centered philosophy and ensure that the district’s strategic plan will meet the academic and social emotional needs of our students. Dr. Bernier also plans to prioritize the district’s budget to ensure that the district is being fiscally responsible and good stewards of taxpayer dollars. \nThe district’s core values will guide Dr. Bernier’s leadership: \n\nExcellence\nIntegrity\nHigh Expectations\nAccountability\nBelief in Students\nProfessionalism\n\nPrior to Lee County\, Dr. Bernier served as the Chief of Staff for the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Las Vegas\, Nevada\, the fifth largest school district in the country. He was a devoted classroom teacher\, Assistant Principal\, Principal at middle\, high and virtual schools\, Director of Professional Development and Associate Superintendent. His final promotion with OCPS resulted in Dr. Bernier leading the Office of School Choice where he was responsible for all choice options including Alternative Education\, Charter Schools\, Orange County Virtual School\, K-12 Magnet Programs\, School Age Services\, Student Enrollment\, Teen Parent Program and Home Education. These responsibilities supported the vision and mission of OCPS and influenced the trajectory for more than 200\,000 students\, 25\,000 team members and a budget in excess of 2.2 billion dollars. \nDr. Bernier has received numerous recognitions for his work including being named Florida Principal for the Year by The Florida PTA. DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker for July 19th Meeting:Olena Hall\, Olga & Volodymyr Vermiichyk\nUpdate on Ukraine\nOlena Hall was born in Ukraine in 1986 and moved to the U.S. in 2015. She earned her masters degree in Philology (The study of language) from Volyn National University in 2008.  She worked as a school teacher in Ukraine until she moved to the United States.  Since arriving in the U.S. Olena has spent time raising her now 15 year old son and 6 year old daughter as well as working for several years as a Paraprofessional helping children learn the English language. She has also spent time advocating for Ukrainian causes including organizing supply drives to send Aid to Ukraine. She enjoys advocating for Ukrainians and talking about Ukrainian culture and language. \nOlga & Volodymyr Vermiichyk (Olena’s parents) – were both born in Ukraine. They have lived in Ukraine since their birth until the present day.  Olga is an assistant principal at the public school near her home\, and has been working as an educator for 38 years. Volodymyr is an electrical engineer\, is now retired and works as a school bus driver. DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker for July 12th Meeting:Liz Christie\nPresident\nLiz Christie serves as the 2023-2024 Rotary Club of Fort Myers Sunrise President.  In May of 2023 she traveled to the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne\, Australia in preparation for the year as Club President.  During her presentation\, she will review the convention activities and share her experiences in Melbourne and Sydney. \nShe has been a Rotarian for 23 years and proudly served as Club President of the Rotary Club of Palatine\, IL in 2011-2012.  She was born in Winona\, MN and attended the University of Rochester\, NY where she received a BA in Political Science and minors in both Marketing and Economics.   She relocated to the Chicagoland area and attended DePaul University where she earned an MBA in Change Leadership Management. \nShe spent her years in the Chicagoland area working with nonprofits and businesses to create local\, national and international events.  During her tenure she coordinated activities ranging from golf outings with the Chicago Bears to private label food industry trade shows to dinner dance galas for local youth programs.  Through her own event company\, ElizEvents\, she initiated the area’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration and parade\, as well as the Rotary Oktoberfest celebration – both of which still remain strong in the Palatine\, IL community. \nIn 2019 she and her husband\, Matt\, moved to Fort Myers.  After finding an event position with a manufacturing reliability company\, Covid arrived and essentially wiped the on-site event industry off the map.  This provided an opportunity to explore the world of community management and in June of 2020 she received her state Community Association Manager’s license.  She currently works for Castle Management as a CAM in Estero\, FL.  Liz is also a current member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Moose. \nWEEKLY SUNRISE MEETING\nJoin us on Wednesday at the Crowne Plaza Fort Myers at Bell Tower Shops\n13051 Bell Tower Drive\, FL\, 33907\nLET US KNOW YOU ARE ATTENDING\n\nCan’t Make it?\nJoin our Zoom Meeting – 2 Ways to Join\nONEClick on the link to our ZOOM ROOM below.
